WHAT IS A PUBLIC-DOMAIN WORK? A public-domain work is a book, story, picture, or other creative work that people are free to use without asking the original creator for permission. Many public-domain books were written a long time ago. Their copyright has ended, so the work can now be shared, studied, printed, and sometimes adapted in new ways. Public domain does not mean the original creator should be forgotten. At RiseUp EQ, we believe in giving credit to the people who created the stories and illustrations we enjoy. When we can, we tell you the title, author or artist, and where the original work came from. Sometimes we may shorten a passage, explain an old-fashioned word, or add new activities and illustrations to help today’s readers enjoy the material. When we do, we will make that clear. Public-domain works give us a special chance to discover older stories, learn from the past, and create new learning adventures while still respecting the people who made the original work.
