Across the wide prairie, five ponies waited for the girls. Mr. Tim warranted them to be steady. They rode sidesaddle instead of astride and wore long skirts for the trail. After a noon siesta, the friends met forlorn travelers and heard about a woman who had eloped years before. One voice quavered as questions followed.
