HISTORY IN HINDSIGHT RIDING IN 1913 - READY TO RIDE?
When Genevieve’s friends prepared to ride, even their clothing mattered! Around 1913, many women in formal riding circles wore long riding habits and rode sidesaddle . But not everyone did. Some women rode astride , with one leg on each side, especially in western and rough country settings. HORSES & GUARDS AT WORK The girls soon discovered that ranch riding was not all picnics and moonlight adventures. Day herders watched grazing cattle from horseback, where horses gave them height and mobility to cover wide country. Other cowboys moved herds or stood night guard —but this rider is watching the herd. CHUCKWAGON ON THE MOVE The Happy Hexagons were fascinated when prairie schooners- large covered wagons used for overland travel-stopped at the ranch. Ranch and cattle crews used another kind of wagon, too: the chuck wagon. It carried food, cooking gear, and supplies, becoming a mobile camp kitchen. This one was pulled by four mules.
